Summary of 2.0

I thought some of these activites were very informative, like the RSS feeds and Suffolk wave. Others seemed like they wouldn't be as useful in the library setting, like Twitter and Craigslist.

I also think it intimidated some people who aren't as up to date with stuff like Twitter or Delicious, and it shouldn't have made people feel bad for not knowing how to create a blog or use some of the activities.

Craigslist

I'm a big fan of Craigslist, I found my apartment on there, and it's a great place to find furniture for a lot cheaper than retail. I found this post on there as an example of how cheap some furniture can be:

Google Docs

I had on okay experience with google docs, it's a useful way to share information with others, and google is a very well known and safe way of sharing that information. For a first time user like myself, it was a little confusing and it took some time to figure out how to do it.

Wiki

I liked the Book lovers wiki a lot, I only wish they had more books to choose from. The PALS wiki was also interesting since it had a lot to do with Millenium, but that seems more technical and something that could only help library staff. I think the Book lovers wiki could be useful to patrons since they could find out more information about a book before taking it out.

Finding new feeds

I had never heard of Technorati or Syndic8 before this activity, but I found Technorati to be helpful. When I searched for coupons it brought up a few good blogs that I had never been too that were useful. I think google reader is probably the most well-known one, but I found that Technorati compares equally to it.

My experience with RSS Feeds-activity #12

I think patrons might be a little confused as to what RSS feeds are at first. I don't really use them that often, if ever. The RSS feeds we have on our website might be helpful because it provides a quick link to commonly asked questions, such as new dvds or new books.

RSS Feeds

I use RSS feeds with Google reader, and although I don't use it that often, I can see how it would be useful to some people. I'm not sure how to include a direct link to this, but I like quotes, so I thought the quote of the day section was pretty neat.

Suffolk Wave

I had never used Suffolk Wave prior to this exercise, mostly because I'm not a fan of audiobooks or e-books. I'm not a visual person, so I hate using audiobooks, and I prefer reading from an actual book than from a screen. It is pretty neat how you could transfer it to an Ipod, and I can see how people would enjoy using this site, it's a new way to enjoy books and music.

Flickr

I had also used Flick in the past, and I like the way it is set up in regards to the tags it uses, and the many ways you can search for different images.

Youtube

I have used Youtube in the past, so I was already pretty familiar with it. The only thing I dislike about the site is how strict they are getting with allowing music videos and tv shows on there because of copyright issues.

LibraryThing

I thought LibraryThing was really cool, I had never heard of it prior to doing this activity. I love buying books, and I think this is a neat approach to sharing your bookshelf with other people from all over the world.

I said this is in my other post, but the tag cloud is a really interesting way to categorize items. At first I did not realize that the larger the tag font size, the more common that search term was. I think that's a great way to categorize books, plus it provides different search terms that people might not think of.

Delicious

I thought Delicious.com was a very unique site. I think It's a really neat tool to share the websites you have discovered with other people, and learn about some new ones. I can see myself using this site in the future, and until this activity, I had no idea that it even existed. I can definitely see how libraries can use this tool to further help patrons in their search for items.

I think the tag cloud is really cool, and it's a great way to narrow down searches.

Facebook and Myspace

I already have both Facebook and Myspace accounts, although I prefer Facebook. They are both similar because they allow people from all over the world to connect with one another, using the site as medium. I have found that Facebook is a little more popular with older people, while Myspace is more popular with teenagers.

I think this sort of communication appeals to so many people because it's such an easy way to stay connected with people you know. It also gives a unique opportunity to connect with new people.

I noticed that the MMSCL facebook page is more active and has more members than the Myspace page. This might be a sign that Myspace is losing some popularity, or it might just mean that there are not a lot of people who are aware that we have a Myspace page. Either way, I think the librarys facebook page will hopefully continue to grow in terms of its members and popularity.

Twitter

Twitter is better than I expected than it would be, although I don't plan on visiting it very often.
